FTA today announced the opportunity to apply for $610 million in competitive grant funding to support state and local efforts to buy buses; build bus facilities; and support workforce development through the FY 2026 Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Infrastructure Programs. FTA Launches New Dashboard to Make Public Transit Safety and Performance More Transparent for Commuters

Today FTA launched a new online data tool , designed to make it easier for Americans to access safety, security, and performance data for public transit systems nationwide. The new online tool, Transit Moves America , uses the existing data that FTA collects through the National Transit Database to provide a better snapshot of transit systems’ safety and security, accessibility, and system reliability. Key features: Safety and security related data will be refreshed monthly Accessibility and efficiency data will be updated annually National averages related to safety and security data will be available as well as metrics for individual transit agencies Data will be customized to reflect conditions on bus systems and train systems Operating costs per passenger trip are available for the 25 largest urban areas in the nation The release of this new online tool accompanies a Request for Information (RFI) issued in June, soliciting input from the transit industry and the public about how to assess the quality of public transportation service across five areas: safety and security; cleanliness; universal accessibility; real-time service data; and system reliability. FTA Announces Approximately $19 Million Funding Opportunity for Tribal Transit Projects

FTA today announced the availability of approximately $19 million in competitive grant funding to support transit services for American Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages in rural areas. FTA’s Tribal Transit Program supports public transportation for federally recognized Indian tribes and Alaska Native villages, groups, or communities in rural areas and Indian Country. FTA Announces $166 Million Notice of Funding Opportunity to Replace Railcars Across the Country

FTA today announced the availability of approximately $166 million in competitive grant funding through its Rail Vehicle Replacement Program. The Fiscal Year 2026 funds will support efforts to replace our nation’s aging railcars for the safety and convenience of riders everywhere. The Rail Vehicle Replacement Program funds transit agencies and state and local governmental authorities’ efforts to replace rail vehicles that are approaching or have exceeded their useful life, so that passengers will experience an improved commute. FTA Announces Funding for Public Transportation Supporting 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced it is investing approximately $100.3 million to public transportation supporting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ensuring local transit systems can supplement service and meet increased demands. These funds were made available through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2026, passed by Congress and signed by President Trump. Planning, capital and operating expenses are eligible for the funding which is apportioned by a formula accounting for stadium capacity and number of matches in each host city. The Federal share for these funds is up to 100 percent and no local match is required. Transit agencies supporting World Cup events must obligate these funds within one fiscal year of the closing of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FTA Announces New Round of Available Funding for Transit Station Accessibility

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced the availability of $686 million in federal funding to make it easier for people with disabilities and mobility needs to access some of the nation's oldest and busiest rail transit systems through essential upgrades, such as elevators. Hundreds of transit stations built before 1990, known as legacy stations, are not accessible to people with disabilities. The All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP) ensures that those relying on rail systems can get to essential destinations like work and school with more options for accessible public transportation. FTA Publishes 2025 CIG Policy Guidance Update to Remove the “social cost of carbon” from Rating Criteria

FTA today published its updated policy guidance for the Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program. This guidance, which amends the CIG Policy Guidance last updated in December 2024, incorporates a previously applied methodology that utilizes the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) designation for FTA’s evaluation of the environmental benefits of CIG projects. FTA will no longer consider the social cost of carbon analysis when rating CIG projects. The updated guidance also incorporates other feedback received in response to the August 2025 Proposed Policy Guidance public comment period. FTA Announces $1.5 Billion Notice of Funding Opportunity to Expand Bus Manufacturing

FTA today announced the availability of approximately $1.5. billion to support state and local efforts to buy buses; build bus facilities; and support workforce development. The competitive grant funds are available through a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for FTA’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities and Low or No Emission programs. FTA's Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program supports transit agencies in buying and rehabilitating buses and vans and building bus maintenance facilities. FTA’s Low or No Emission Program makes funding available to help transit agencies buy or lease U.S.-built low- or no-emission vehicles, including related equipment or facilities. This year’s NOFO updates previous requirements by removing funding priorities related to climate change, sustainability, environmental justice, and diversity, equity and inclusion. FTA is now prioritizing transit agencies that describe how their projects will improve the accessibility of transportation for families with young children, with a focus on improved access to jobs, healthcare and retail. FTA Announces Projects Selected for $1.25 Million in Transit Experience Research Grants

Today, FTA announced the selection of Monterey-Salinas Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to receive a share of $1.25 million in Enhancing Mobility Innovation (EMI) grants to research, develop, and demonstrate new approaches and tools to improve the transit rider experience. Monterey-Salinas Transit will receive $449,860 to demonstrate an innovative method to verify the eligibility for rider discounts in contactless payment systems. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will receive $804,586 to retrofit electric buses with automated driving features that enable more buses to travel more frequently in exclusive bus lanes to improve safety, efficiency, and capacity. FTA’s EMI program supports innovation in mobility that meets the evolving needs of transit riders; advances equitable and climate-smart transportation; and improves public transportation. FTA Announces $79.7 Million Grant for New Bus Rapid Transit Line in King County, WA

FTA yesterday announced a $79.7 million construction grant to King County Metro to support a bus rapid transit line that will provide fast, frequent, and reliable service between the cities of Renton, Auburn, and Kent, located south of Seattle. The grant for the new RapidRide I Line, which will feature rebranded “green” hybrid electric buses, was funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. King County’s RapidRide I Line will improve travel times and the rider experience over a heavily traveled King County Metro bus line by providing nearly two miles of exclusive bus-only lanes and transit signal priority. The BRT will also include off-board fare payment, all-door boarding, and weekday service every 10 to 15 minutes during the day. The 17-mile route will have 41 new stations and will improve rider connections in the regional system, including the RapidRide F Line, Sound Transit buses, and Sounder commuter rail. The I Line will be the 10th to open as part of the RapidRide network, adding to a robust regional BRT system with current daily ridership of about 63,000 trips. The federal support for the estimated $168.5 million project comes from FTA’s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program , which helps communities carry out transformational transit projects.
