Safety, cleanliness and accessibility are three main areas that needs to be addressed to make public transit family friendly. Transit systems, especially those in large metro areas, generally perform poorly in these areas. 1. Safety. I don't feel safe taking my young kids on public buses or rail. Homelessness, mental health concerns, drug addicts, and bad actors are four contributing factors. Transit facilities need to be well lit. In addition, security personnel need to be present. More security cameras in vehicles and facilities, please. Use robotic patrols if economically feasible. 2. Cleanliness. Escalator steps and stairs are very dirty. Urine smell is common in transit facilities and particularly bad in elevators. Elevators have poor ventilation and are dimly lit. Walls and glasses inside elevators are not properly wiped clean. Floors in transit facilities and elevators are not mopped. I am also afraid to use the public restroom, if there is one that can be found in a transit facility. 3. Steep escalators getting in and out of underground transit facilities are hazardous for little kids and those with a stroller. The elevators, as described above, are usually very filthy and poorly lit. There are also few of them, and some of them are tight or small.
