Summary: The commenter, identifying as a taxpayer, opposes the Mid-States Corridor project, arguing that it is an unnecessary and fiscally irresponsible use of public funds that primarily benefits a few wealthy business owners. They advocate for redirecting the project's funding toward improving existing infrastructure and the state's school system instead.
As a tax payer of Indiana as well as a Federal tax payer I vehemently appose the tax payer funded project known as the Mid-States Corridor. It is simply not needed. Yes improvements in passing lanes on highway 231 seems reasonable. You are talking an incredible amount of tax money here. You are also asking farmers and land owners to hand over personal investments that may go back generations. A project of this scope should be about a real benefit to its citizens not just a few wealthy business owners. This project in my view seems to be driven by Individual personal intersest and very little towards the public interest or benefit. Our current federal government has taken issue with the fraudulent use of tax payers monies, and it is long over due. The Mid-States Corridor smelled bad from the beginning and has not improved over time. Please stop the this abusive use of tax payers hard earned dollars. Want to improve Indiana in a big way? Take this funding and inject it into our School systems. Start with improving Teachers salaries to attract the brightest and the best for our Indiana children. Now that is a benefit to all Indiana Tax payers. The following is a list of 15 talking points that I have been shown, studied and do agree with each bullet. 1. Never should have been – no purpose for it. 2. Narrative has continued to change as the study progressed. 3. No proven economic development. 4. Cost continues to escalate. $1.1 Billion for entire 54 miles at 2020 costs to $1.1 Billion just for Dubois County section at 2024 costs, estimated $3.4 Billion for entire project not including land acquisition. Not economically feasible. 5. Determined no real congestion issues or safety concerns. 6. Other ways to improve traffic flow include the passing lanes on 231 and improved intersections as well as identifying and studying other existing roads that can be improved at a fraction of the cost. Whatever happened to the commitment made by Governor Holcomb in 2021 to use $75 million for the passing lanes and intersection improvements? 7. Polls have proven that over 80% of the county residents do not want our rural community destroyed by a new terrain highway, including farmland, forests and Legacy farms. 8. The process used to get “public” input is skewed. The study group does extensive interviews for input with stakeholders who are business executives pushing for this to benefit their own company and when INDOT holds their public meetings it is more of a show and tell event with minimal public attendances and most that attend are against the project. 9. The Tier 1 study started with the Purpose and Need was to improve safety and relieve congestion, which was not justified by the FHWA, so it was changed to improve business and personal regional connectivity in Dubois County and Southern Indiana and to improve highway connections to existing multi-modal locations in Southern Indiana. Then for the Tier 2 study the purpose and need were modified to provide improved system linkage from Dubois County to major business destinations and freight intermodal centers, improving employee access to Dubois County businesses, increasing the efficiency of freight operations, and completing Section 2 of the MSC. In others, they keep making any narrative to try to justify this project and none of it is valid. 10. At one point the Purpose and Need was time travel saved but when it was challenged because their own data showed a 4-minute saving from Jasper to Indianapolis, if you notice, it is no longer in the Purpose and Need. However, they still are now throwing out numbers like 14-minute travel time saving through Dubois County. 11. Another false narrative is their claim that the MSC will reduce semi-trailer traffic on the existing U.S. 231 by 1,700 a day, but there is no reference to the study or model that was used. In the meantime, our own study over a two-week period shows at the most there is 660 trucks going through Dubois County a day. They also don’t show in their narrative that is a projection by 2050. 12. Impact on the local residents – roads dead ended, re-routes to get access or cross the MSC. 13. Flawed process, corrupt, secretive. 14. Over 400 other safety-related road and bridge projects throughout the State of Indiana were canceled or indefinitely postponed due to lack of funds. The 3.4 Billion Dollars should be used to maintain and improve the infrastructure already in place. There is ZERO need for a new-terrain highway in Southern Indiana. 15. This unwarranted road project is an inexcusable waste of taxpayer funds and a horrific example of fiscal irresponsibility.
