Summary: The Fukushima Fallout Awareness Network (Citizens for Health) supports the proposed action, urging the FDA to provide transparent information regarding radioactive contamination levels in food imports from Japan. They argue that the public needs this information to protect against health risks like bioaccumulation and genetic mutations caused by radiation.
We cannot accept radioactive contamination in food imported from Japan since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown on March 11, 2011. We know that food grown on agricultural soils contaminated by radioactive fallout or harvested from the Pacific Ocean where radioactive water is being continually released will be biomagnified throughout the food chain and will bioaccumulate in our bodies over a lifetime. The resulting health impacts are particularly devastating for women and girts whose bodies are far more vulnerable to the ionizing impacts of radiation.
We also know that genetic mutations and trans-generational DNA damage occur from the ingestion of food contaminated by radioactive fallout. As radioactive contamination increases worldwide, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must be forthcoming with information about the levels of deadly cesium (and other radioactive contaminants) in the food we consume that are 12 to 24 times higher than what Japan permits for sale or consumption.
Without this information, we cannot protect our families from the dangers of radioactive food or make wise choices about the food that we purchase and consume. The Food and Drug Administration must do its job and protect the public health by informing us about the presence of harmful substances in food imports from Japan.
