Summary: The Fukushima Fallout Awareness Network (Citizens for Health) supports the proposed action, urging the FDA to implement stricter food safety standards for seafood and other products potentially contaminated by radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi plant. They argue that current U.S. permissible levels are too high compared to other countries and pose a risk to consumers.
In that 10 years, more than 1.3 million tons of radioactive wastewater has accumulated at Fukushima, and more is added every day to keep the Daiichi reactor cores cool.
The plant’s operators have announced plans to start releasing that water into the ocean. Radioactive elements will only be partially filtered due to admittedly incomplete filtration methods, and there is no filtration technology for radioactive tritium.
The FDA needs to act NOW to protect American consumers of seafood and other products, including tea, that may be contaminated by this release. The FDA’s permissible levels are the highest in the world, opening the door wide to risks from these products. We have a right to food safety standards that are in line with other countries such as Japan, whose allowable limits are one-twelfth of those in the U.S.
