Summary: The Fukushima Fallout Awareness Network (Citizens for Health) supports the proposed action to establish a binding limit of 5 Becquerels of Cesium 134 and 137 per kilogram in the U.S. food supply. They argue that current recommended levels are too high and call for stricter enforcement and the closing of import loopholes to protect public health.
In the face of ongoing radioactive fallout and contamination from various sources, it is absolutely critical to the health of U.S. citizens that a binding limit of 5 Becquerels of Cesium 134 and 137 per kilogram in the US food supply be placed as the maximum level of contaminant allowed in food sold and consumed in the U.S. The 1200 Bq per Kg recommended level, the highest in the world, is totally unacceptable. There need to be regulations that are strictly enforced, to insure that all food supplies to correctly tested, especially imported products. Any import loopholes, such as trade through Mexico, need to be closed and enforced. Our health has been compromised in exchange for profit and power, intermixing with global trade policies and politics that are detrimental to our country's health and survival. We need a binding regulation now.
