Summary: A Master of Social Work student argues that the United States lacks federally mandated paid maternity leave, which creates economic injustices for low-income workers. The commenter urges the Department of Labor to establish a federal policy for full wage replacement during maternity leave to promote workforce stability and equity.
I am submitting this comment as a Master of Social Work student advocating for equitable labor policies that support working families. The lack of federally mandated paid maternity leave in the United States represents a significant economic injustice. While some states, such as California, have implemented paid family leave programs, partial wage replacement continues to exclude many low-income workers who cannot afford to take extensive time off after giving birth. As a result, many women are forced to return to work prematurely, compromising their recovery, financial stability, and ability to bond with their child. This disproportionately impacts workers in low-wage and hourly positions, further widening economic inequities. I urge the U.S. Department of Labor to prioritize the development and support of policies that establish federally mandated paid maternity leave with full wage replacement. Ensuring equitable access to paid leave is essential to promoting workforce stability, economic security, and fair labor standards. Thank you for your consideration.
