Summary: Davis W. This comment was done through paper reviews of representative documented evidence worldwide on whether genetically engineered (GE) plants pose materially different plant pest risks compared to their conventional counterparts. Drawing on U.S. regulatory records (USDA APHIS, EPA, FDA), peer-reviewed literature, and international agency findings (EFSA, ISAAA), this review finds no approved GE plant has been scientifically confirmed to pose a greater plant pest risk than its conventional equivalent. However, documented contamination incidents, herbicide-resistant weed proliferation, Bt insect resistance erosion, and regulatory gaps reveal real-world risks not fully captured by current plant pest frameworks. In brief, my comment argues that the existing regulatory concept of “plant pest risk” may be too narrow to address the full ecological footprint of commercial GE crops, and recommends a broadened risk assessment paradigm.
