I support the Interim Final Rule and encourage DHS and USCIS to further strengthen its implementation. First, asylum applications require significant government resources, including case processing, security screening, interviews, and adjudication. Reasonable filing fees and annual maintenance fees help ensure that applicants are committed to pursuing legitimate claims and help offset the administrative costs borne by taxpayers. Second, I recommend that DHS consider increasing asylum-related fees beyond the current minimum levels. The current fee structure may not fully reflect the actual costs associated with processing and adjudicating asylum applications, particularly in light of growing caseloads and backlogs. Third, I strongly support enhanced financial vetting of asylum applicants. DHS should implement procedures to verify the source of funds used to support applicants during their stay in the United States. Such verification could help identify fraud, money laundering, criminal financing, or support from organizations engaged in unlawful activities. Financial transparency would strengthen the integrity of the asylum system and improve public confidence in immigration adjudications. Finally, DHS should continue investing in robust identity verification, background checks, and financial screening mechanisms to ensure that humanitarian protections are reserved for individuals with legitimate claims who comply with U.S. laws and regulations.
