Summary: A Ukrainian national currently in the U.S. under the U4U program supports the action to clarify and expedite discretionary employment authorization. The commenter argues that the current delays in obtaining work permits create significant financial hardship and instability for refugees who need to work to support their families.
I am a Ukrainian in the USA under U4U program and also applied for TPS. For the first time I was waiting for my EAD for 7 months, second time for 1 year. I applied for TPS 1.5 years ago and I’ve still been waiting for it. I applied for re-parole and TPS because of permanent uncertainty from the government and constant changes.
This is very stressful and very expensive, family of two has to spend around $4000-$5000 to keep paperwork up to date. And considering the fact that Ukrainians arrived in the USA under humanitarian parole and reasons - it is still dangerous in Ukraine because of massive shelling by Russia, war has not stopped. I am from Kyiv, my family is still there. It is truly a humanitarian crisis, I wish my family could avoid this or move somewhere else, but they can not due to personal and financial reasons.. I am helping and supporting them by sending money when I am able to.
Finding a job in this market is challenging, and by approving these updates it makes finding a job or even keep working for a Ukrainian in the US almost impossible. Employers are not interested in extra paperwork things and in uncertainty with their employees. Cost of living in the US is high, it is very hard to live only on 1 salary, 2 people have to work. And if they are able to please make this process easier, rather then make it impossible and force people to leave with no savings.
I do believe that right to work is mistakenly treated as a privilege while it is a necessity, it is impossible to stay and live in the US without working. Ukrainians are very hardworking people, they pay taxes, open businesses and contribute to so society. We are not criminals, we abide law. Please let us work and get the EAD faster so we feel security and stability in tomorrow and future. Thank you!
