Summary: An incoming PhD student in an Oncology Graduate Program opposes the proposed regulation because it threatens federal funding from the NIH and NSF. The commenter argues that cutting this funding will hinder scientific research, slow the pace of discovery, and endanger clinical trial participants who rely on life-saving treatments.
I am an incoming first-year PhD student in my Oncology Graduate Program. Funding from NIH and NSF grants has supported me throughout my academic and scientific career. Because of that funding, I was able to attend and present at multiple scientific conferences, contribute to publications, and conduct groundbreaking research. Taking away this funding will not only prevent the use of those vital tools for advancing science, but also slow the pace of discovery even more than it already has since last February. We, the scientists, not only depend on this funding but also on participants in clinical trials. Cutting funding is dangerous to the health of these participants because it will prevent them from receiving potentially life-saving treatment.
