Comment on OMB-2026-0034-0001

Quite literally every aspect of the OMB proposed changes will hurt small business, research collaboration and American leadership in the world. America's research community is the engine that drives our leadership in technology and healthcare. Innovation across a wide range of sectors is being eroded by the contniued assault on resource availability, scientific independence of researchers and the overall stability of government support. The best and brightest people in the world are choosing not to come to the U.S. Labs are struggling to maintain momentum on their research and in some cases closing down their research altogether. Creating new burdens on grantees, injecting political influence into the process, and adding a level of overall instability will take a system already under enormous strain and push it one big step closer to collapse. American researchers are thoughtful, caring and rationale people. If the government begins to impose political influence, especially when those imposing that influence have no scientific basis for their decisions, will be a crushing blow to American scientific exceptionalism. I can see no benefits in the new OMB rules being proposed, with negative impacts that will likely take decades to undo. I strongly recommend that the OMB and Congress NOT implement these proposed new rules, and instead look for wasy to strengthen the independence and stability of research scientists doing the (often thankless) job of solving the hard problems in technology, science, healthcare and beyond. These proposed new rules will hurt all of us!
