As an MIT graduate (BS civil engineering, Class of 1980), and then a Stanford graduate (MBA, class of 1985), I write to express my consternation and worry at the proposed changes in research funding. Basic research, whether in science, engineering, or management (the areas of my concern) should not be dictated by the vagaries of political appointees or views. Advancing knowledge should remain above the fray.
Of particular worry to me is any impact on energy. I am involved in renewable energy in Africa (mostly biomass projects), and the current views of the US administration go counter to my views, and to those of most OECD countries.
I therefore recommend that the OMB be utmost careful in its restrictions on research funding.
