Summary: A professor of social sciences expresses concern over the proposed regulation, arguing that it represents a turn toward political interference in science. The commenter advocates for continued investment in evidence-based decision-making and independent scientific efforts.
I am writing because I believe it is vital to protect science from political interference. My dad, a biology teacher at a public school, taught me early about the wonders of vaccines, space travel, and the many other scientific discoveries made possible by America's investment in science. I got my PhD and became a professor in the social sciences and I believe in my students and the new discoveries that will one day be possible if we continue to invest in evidence-based decision making. I could make an argument more grounded in facts and information, but I will leave that to my colleagues and simply note that so many of us are so deeply concerned and passionately committed to robust, independent scientific efforts and appalled by this recent turn that will set us back decades in new discoveries.
