Summary: A professor from the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT opposes the proposed regulation. They argue that basing federal funding on political appeal rather than scientific quality will undermine innovation, waste tax dollars, and threaten national interests.
The proposed Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance is a threat to democracy, science, and America's strategic interests. If decisions about funding science are based on the political appeal of a project rather than the quality of the proposal, we will lose the ability to attract and support those most likely to cure diseases, make breakthroughs, create innovative tools and technology, and train the best and brightest of the next generation. This proposal is an obvious threat to our nation. It would represent a choice for political expedience over recognized standards of excellence and lead to a monumental waste of both American tax dollars and American talent. I am writing as a Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT and I urge you to oppose this regulatory proposal.
