Summary: A veterinary researcher in the academic field opposes the proposed regulations, arguing that they impose excessive control over scientific research by non-experts. The commenter asserts that restricting expenses for conference support and journal fees will hinder international collaboration and stall progress on critical medical treatments like arthritis research.
I am a veterinary researcher in the academic field. I have participated in clinical research and submitted several publications in the translational research field with NIH funding. This is an unprecedented level of control over research by untrained and uneducated politicians, who cannot grasp the difference between transgenic and transgender. Not only would this effectively neuter scientific advances in the United States it could cause massive harm across the United states. As someone in translational research, the work I do directly impacts human welfare. These proposed changes pose a direct threat to progressing treatments and preventative care. My field is arthritis, a painful disease affected a massive proportion of the world, let alone the US. International collaboration is vital to addressing this particular disease, and I'm sure many more. The suggestions that conference support, journal subscription and article processing fees would not be allowable expenses would effectively bring American scientific progress to a screaming halt. Scientists and highly educated professionals could exit en masse, leaving this country to suffer more.
