LEAD Agency endorses and supports the comments presented by Peace Works of Kansas City, with the exception of this paragraph: “NRC Chairman Ho K. Nieh stated explicitly that this rule exists to power artificial intelligence data centers. This is a licensing framework designed for mass deployment of unattended nuclear reactors — stripped of the oversight infrastructure that made nuclear power safe — in service of a commercial industry, not the public interest.” LEAD Agency stands in solidarity with the Indigenous Peoples of the western US that have struggled with the environmental and health issues resulting from uranium extraction and the refining and disposal of nuclear wastes. Nuclear energy is the most expensive form of energy commercially available and is built on the backs of Indigenous Peoples who do not benefit from the energy, they merely wallow in the most dangerous pollution known. Oklahoma has dealt with the legacy of nuclear fuels processing because of the three nuclear fuels processing centers formally located in our state and run by the Kerr-McGee Corporations. These facilities left a legacy of contamination in our state, and impacted Cherokee Nation and other tribal lands.
