I strongly support the proposed management plan (2026-09372) for Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. As a lifelong Washington resident, I have spent my life exploring and appreciating our state's natural landscapes. I grew up visiting the Washington and Oregon coast, and today I continue to hike and camp throughout Washington and Oregon. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the importance of protecting our coastal ecosystems, wildlife, and the habitats they depend on. Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is one of Washington's greatest natural treasures, and it deserves a current, enforceable management plan that reflects today's environmental challenges. Relying on guidance that was last updated in 2011 is no longer sufficient to address changing ocean conditions, emerging threats, and the growing need for science-based stewardship. I also support NOAA's draft environmental assessment because it carefully evaluates the environmental effects of implementing the updated management plan and continuing field activities within the sanctuary. Decisions affecting such an important marine ecosystem should be based on sound science and a thorough understanding of their environmental impacts. Protecting marine wildlife has never been more important. In recent years, we have seen troubling reports of record numbers of malnourished whales along the Washington coast, highlighting the pressures facing marine ecosystems. While many factors contribute to ocean health, maintaining healthy marine habitats, protecting water quality, and managing the sanctuary using the best available science are essential steps toward supporting resilient wildlife populations. The National Marine Sanctuaries Act requires NOAA to carry out the purposes and policies that protect these nationally significant waters. Updating and implementing this management plan is an important part of fulfilling that responsibility and ensuring the sanctuary continues to receive the protections Congress intended. Finally, I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this public comment process. Public input allows everyday Washingtonians like me to help shape how Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is managed for future generations. I encourage NOAA to finalize and implement a strong management plan that prioritizes healthy ecosystems, clean water, thriving wildlife, and long-term stewardship of this remarkable place.
