Ropeless gear is difficult, expensive and unpopular. It is also an essential component of any plan that has a chance of avoiding the extinction of NARW. We cannot let this iconic species go extinct on our watch. We need to encourage technological development so this method can be made easy, affordable and popular. That takes getting fixed gear fishermen, scientists, engineers and gov't officials working constructively together. Incentives such as access to open areas, cost reimbursement and other incentives will be needed to maximize participation and the rate of development. If the lobster industry becomes associated with the extinction of NARW, it will not go well for them in their efforts to market their lobsters. No one NEEDS to eat lobster. People pay a lot for lobster but the taste and experience makes it worthwhile. It won't be if consumers think they are contributing to extinction of whales.
