Hello dear puppeteers and string pullers! It seems youve already seen an outrage for a song remembered anew. Im calling it that because that is literally what our fellow Rice's whale is. A new species, with an older song. While we just recently discovered them to be a totally separate species from the Bryde's whale in 2021, The Rice's whale came to be 3 million years ago. Carrying heritage far beyond our own comprehension. A story just as deep as the rest, and flows unlike the others. Now, onto the real talk. .....the consequences, if i must! Although i am but a child. So i'll try my best...on your terms. It seems the NOAA (under jacobs) in this administration has found a loophole to remove protections for this whale. ..and of course with the entering of more oil operations..And such. Realistically speaking, 51 individuals for any species is a dangerous low. I mean.. A whale named 'Witchhazel' died from a single piece of plastic located inside of them. Now imagine Letting OIL PROJECTS enter the picture. if you strip protections for an already endangered species, you could face lawsuits from us activists (not saying i will, but who knoooowwws!), extreme public backlash, and even MORE protesting! (..which..the science says were definitely being logical here!) Now, this might be your argument. 'The Rice's whale is like any other whale, or the Bryde's whale, as they used to call it. why should we protect a species with others elsewhere?' or 'what good impact would it even have on our communities if its one less whale species in the gulf?' ... I hate to break it to you, but from a single skull they found out the Rice's whale is its OWN SPECIES (the same individual that proved how fragile they could be: witchhazel!). Let alone, they are living beings. Kind of like the red wolf! They look like coyotes to some people, but does that mean they deserve any less attention or protection? NO! And about impacts on your nations communities, especially in the gulf: These whales are a key species when it comes to storing carbon dioxide in favor of the environment. Because of how large they are, whales in general can store tons of Carbon in a single lifespan. And when they die, their bodies sink to the bottom of the ocean, where deep sea ecosystems rely on the nutrients whale carcasses bring. And because its cycled through, the carbon dioxide cannot return to the surface, and all while ALSO feeding those ecosystems at the bottom of our seas! Now, this helps in improving our atmosphere and waterways for people living in the gulf of Mexico, that trail down long term. The more whales, the better. we just need to find a way to live alongside them forever. So ringmasters, if you dont mind..
