I strongly request that Rice's whale remain classified as Endangered and not downlisted. There are only 51 left on the planet and unique to the Gulf of Mexico. I concur with fellow conservationists whose research on Rice's whales point to the devastating impact of human activity on their survival. Downlisting them would only serve this administration that seeks to profit from industry and the companies earning contracts to do work that causes them injury, death, loss and pollution of habitat and food sources. This is a blatant move that has no care for wildlife that also call earth home. The ocean is their home and we must honor and respect that. Reckless greed and short term profit through destructive industry is short sighted and will cause long term damage to our natural world and extinction of species. Including one day, ourselves. In 2016, NOAA scientists conducted a formal Status Review of these very whales (Status review of Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera edeni) in the Gulf of Mexico under the Endangered Species Act (2016), doi:10.7289/V5/TM-SEFSC-692). With the limited data at the time, they were classified as a subspecies of Bryde’s whale. Nonetheless, even ten years ago, marine biology experts determined this group of whales was unique and at such risk of extinction that they deserved full protections under the Endangered Species Act. With the additional robust data available in 2026, there is no justifiable reason to remove status and protections from this uniquely Gulf species.
