I am writing in opposition to this rule change. There are two reasons for this. The first is that it vastly outpaces inflation for the satisfactory cost when the rule was last changed in 1989. To keep pace with inflation the cost today would be just over $400, not almost $800. Second, the government, particularly the administrative infrastructure thereof has gotten more efficient and less materially wasteful since 1989. There is the required simplification of paperwork/ forms, the digitalization of forms, and digital storing of forms along with greater efficiencies in routing investigations and approvals. In fact, the largest expenditure increase by far is the farcical authoritarian militarization and surge of hired and poorly trained federal goons the current administration has unleashed upon this country causing death, misery and economic strain throughout. If there are costs to be recovered, the government would do best to end that blatantly xenophobic power grab that does no service for the American people.
