Summary: The commenter, a consumer of 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), opposes the proposed scheduling/ban of the compound. They argue that 7-OH is a safe and effective alternative for managing chronic back pain without the risks associated with opioids and request that the DEA focus on safety measures like labeling and age restrictions instead of a blanket ban.
I am writing as a consumer who uses 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), a compound derived from the kratom plant, to ask that the DEA not ban 7-OH products.
I currently use 7-OH because it helps me manage back pain and allows me to avoid going on opioids. In my experience, it has been beneficial when used responsibly. I do not consider myself addicted, and I find it to be less habit-forming than other options. I only take it on the really bad days when my pain is at its worst.
I understand that the DEA is considering a limit of 1 mg per serving/product. For context, I currently take up to 25 mg on the days I need it and have never experienced any serious problems or adverse events related to my use. I believe my experience demonstrates that responsible adult consumers can use these products safely.
I would also like to note that I have had difficulty finding other options that work as well for my back pain. I want to avoid prescription opioids because of their higher risk of dependence and other side effects, and 7-OH has filled an important gap for me that other options have not adequately addressed.
I respectfully ask the DEA to avoid a blanket ban on 7-OH. Instead, please consider policies that preserve access for responsible adults while focusing on product quality, accurate labeling, age restrictions, and other reasonable safety measures.
Thank you for considering my comments and my personal experience as part of your decision-making process.
