I am writing to you today to express my strong support for listing Yellowstone bison on the Endangered Species Act (ESA). I believe that this is the best way to ensure the long-term survival of these iconic animals.<br/><br/>Yellowstone bison are a distinct population segment (DPS) of the Plains bison. They are genetically unique and have a long history of living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. However, their population has been declining in recent years due to a number of factors, including habitat loss, disease, and hunting.<br/><br/>Habitat loss is a major threat to Yellowstone bison. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has been fragmented by human development, and this has made it difficult for bison to find food and water. In addition, climate change is causing the ecosystem to change, and this is making it even more difficult for bison to survive.<br/><br/>Disease is another major threat to Yellowstone bison. Bison are susceptible to a number of diseases, including brucellosis and tuberculosis. These diseases can be transmitted to livestock, and this has led to the slaughter of bison in the past.<br/><br/>Hunting is also a threat to Yellowstone bison. Bison are hunted in both Wyoming and Montana, and this has led to a decline in their population. In addition, some hunters kill bison for sport, and this is not necessary for population management.<br/><br/>I believe that listing Yellowstone bison on the ESA is the best way to address these threats. The ESA would provide these animals with the protection they need to survive. In addition, the ESA would require the Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a recovery plan for Yellowstone bison. This plan would help to ensure that the population of these animals is restored to a healthy level.<br/><br/>I urge you to take action to list Yellowstone bison on the ESA. These animals are an important part of our natural heritage, and we must do everything we can to protect them.
