Summary: A professional guide in Yellowstone expresses concern over the impact of bison population control methods on tourism and the local ecosystem. The commenter argues that the current methods are disrespectful and harmful to scavengers, suggesting that alternative population control methods should be explored.
As a professional guide in Yellowstone for 8 years, it’s quite unnerving and disturbing to my clients who come in for a lovely, educational tour to have a dead bison head in the back of trucks driving through Gardiner. Or having them unknowingly drive the Old Trail only to find bloody carcasses after I’ve just told them the story of the mighty comeback of this species while standing at the Lamar Valley Buffalo Ranch. There are other ways the population could be controlled without this disrespectful massacre. And the lead bullets will also affect our scavengers. Much to “fix” here but it can be done.
