Summary: Rodney A. Harrison, a private citizen and outdoor enthusiast from Missouri, supports the proposed expansion of hunting opportunities at the Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge. He argues that the expansion will improve wildlife management, provide economic benefits to local businesses, and foster conservation stewardship.
Dear Director and Refuge Managers, I am writing to express my strong support for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal to expand hunting opportunities at the Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). As an outdoor enthusiast who values both conservation and public land access, I believe this expansion strikes the right balance for our community.I support this proposed rule for the following reasons: Wildlife Management and Ecology: Expanding well-regulated hunts helps manage resident populations, like white-tailed deer. This protects the refuge's bottomland forests and wet meadows from overbrowsing, ensuring a healthier ecosystem for all 300+ observed bird species. Economic Support for Local Communities: Opening new hunt units in Missouri and Illinois draws ethical sportspeople to the region. This directly boosts small businesses, lodging, and fuel stations between St. Louis and Hannibal. Alignment with State Frameworks: Streamlining these rules to align with the Missouri Department of Conservation lowers barriers to entry. It makes it simpler for families and new hunters to understand the regulations and safely utilize public lands. Fostering Conservation Stewardship: Hunters are historically the primary funders of American conservation through excise taxes and license sales. Providing expanded access ensuring future generations remain personally invested in protecting places like Clarence Cannon NWR. Thank you for your commitment to public access and for providing more than 1,450 new opportunities nationwide. I urge the Service to finalize this rule as proposed. Sincerely, Rodney A. Harrison Lawson, Missouri
