Summary: A former public school student urges the USDA to quickly implement the remaining components of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act. The commenter advocates for expanding the options for nondairy beverages and disability-based substitutions across all child nutrition programs to ensure consistency and meet diverse nutritional needs.
As a graduate of Fairfax County public schools in Virginia, I respectfully urge USDA to swiftly issue regulations implementing the other components of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, including the option to proactively offer nutritionally equivalent nondairy beverages on the lunch line and the ability to accept parental notes for disability-based substitutions. As it did with whole milk, USDA should act immediately to extend the flexibility to offer nutritionally equivalent nondairy beverages and accept parent notes for disability-based substitutions to the School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, after-school snacks, and preschool meals. Aligning these requirements across all child nutrition programs is critical to consistently providing students and families options that meet their nutritional needs.
