My wife went to urgent care for possible ear infection / pain due to contact on the ear from Jiu Jitsu. The nurse practitioner prescribed a course of Ciprofloxacin and only told my wife that she should not partake in any strenuous exercise like Jiu Jitsu while on the antibiotic. The day after taking her first dose, she was experiencing tendon pain across multiple body parts, but specifically her plantar and Achilles. On day two, she experienced full body neuropathy, insomnia, and the prior day symptoms as well. On day 3 she went back to urgent care and told them the side effects and they told her to stop taking it and they prescribed Amoxicillin. more than 18 months later my wife is still dealing with severe tendon pain, neuropathy, and a variety of other side effects. She NEVER would have taken the anti-biotic if she had been told these other possible side effects by the nurse. The nurse also never should have prescribed Cipro as a first line treatment when other alternatives (amoxicillin) were available. The FDA and medical community need to get their act together to prevent this from ever happening again. This anti-biotic is powerful and should only be used as a last resort and even then, the dangers need to be forcefully communicated to the patient.
