Summary: A parent of a child with autism expresses frustration with the current limitations of psychiatric medications and advocates for the exploration of existing drugs for repurposing. The commenter supports the action of investigating new drug repurposing options to address unmet medical needs.
My son is profoundly autistic with self injurious behavior. It’s ridiculous that not only does psychiatric medicine have control over the system instead of neurologist but the same 5 classes of medicine constantly thrown at these individuals is ridiculous. The medicine doesn’t work and actually causes more problems but hardly any doctors listen to patients or parents. Other drugs that already exist that can make a difference need to be tried. Especially if they have minimal side effects unlike the psychiatric medications
