I am a Class A commercial driver with HazMat endorsement, and I do not support the proposal to remove the FDA 510(k) clearance requirement for drug testing assays used in Federal drug testing programs. Based on my experience in the trucking industry, I believe drug testing is an important tool to promote safety and discourage the use of illegal substances among commercial drivers. When drivers know they are subject to strict drug testing programs, they are less likely to use substances that could impair their ability to operate a commercial motor vehicle safely. As a HazMat driver, I understand the serious responsibility we have when operating commercial vehicles and transporting materials that could pose significant risks to public safety in the event of an accident. Because of this, I believe testing standards and oversight must remain strong and reliable. I have observed that companies with strong safety programs and strict compliance standards maintain a culture where drug use is not tolerated. This helps protect drivers, companies, and the public. Commercial drivers carry a great responsibility to society. Any reduction in the oversight, reliability, or credibility of drug testing programs could increase risks to highway safety. Even a small increase in impaired driving could result in serious accidents, injuries, or loss of life. For these reasons, I support maintaining the current FDA 510(k) clearance requirements and continuing strong drug testing standards for all commercial drivers. Public safety must remain the highest priority. Thank you for the opportunity to submit my comments.
