Summary: A patient with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) shares their personal experience of how Tavneos allowed them to successfully taper off prednisone, which caused severe side effects. They urge the agency not to withdraw the drug from the market because it significantly improved their quality of life and health.
I was diagnosed with MPA in October of 2025. The disease hit me like a freight train. In September I was fine and by mid October my kidney function was down to 30%. I had widespread debilitating pain, fever, chills, etc. Could not walk more than 50 feet. Prednisone was the first relief and it started working in hours. 40 mg. I tried to taper a few times, but I would end up in bed with pain, fever and chills. I started swelling in my legs and feet. I lost the ability to taste food. Everything tasted like chewy cardboard. ALL of my teeth became sensitive and drinking fluid at any temperature made me shake and cry from the pain. My face became unrecognizable. I gained 30 lbs and I was miserable and desperate to get off the Prednisone. My rheumatologist started me on Tavneos and after a few weeks we started an aggressive taper. 40 mg -> 30 mg -> 25 mg -> 20 mg -> 15 mg -> 10 mg and then 10 weeks decreasing 1 mg per week. I was finally able to taste food, my teeth aren't sensitive anymore, my feet aren't swelling and I'm starting to see my jawline return. I was diagnosed with some bone loss before this flare and bout with Prednisone and I was really worried about what I was doing to my bones with this medicine. I say Prednisone saved my life and immediately started plotting to kill me. Tavneos is a god send. Please don't remove this from the market. I can't go back to the hell I had with Prednisone.
