Summary: The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC) opposes the petition to reduce or eliminate FDA safety regulations on mifepristone. They argue that the petition relies on biased data and that removing safeguards like REMS and EASU would exacerbate ethical issues, risks to minors, and potential for coercion in telemedicine chemical abortions.
The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC), the most renown Catholic bioethics research, publication, consultation, and education center in the United States, submits the following comments in opposition to the above-referenced Citizen Petition. NCBC represents hundreds of health care professionals, consumers, ethicists, and health care administrators, thus impacting thousands of Americans who rely on the effective and ethical delivery of health care. This aforementioned petition seeks to reduce or eliminate the FDA’s current safety regulations on the chemical abortion drug mifepristone, specifically concerning the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) and Elements to Assure Safe Use (EASU), including Prescriber, Patient, and Pharmacy Certification elements.
