Summary: The Catholic Medical Association (CMA) opposes the petition to reduce or eliminate safety regulations (REMS and EASU) for mifepristone. They argue that the petition relies on biased data that underestimates serious adverse effects and that removing safeguards would exacerbate ethical and societal risks associated with chemical abortion.
I am a pediatrician in Indiana that works for Marian University Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine. As someone concerned about the safety of all patients, I am opposed to all petitions to loosen safety regulations for mifepristone. There is enough recent evidence to confirm that mifepristone is not safe and harmful for women, children, and families; and the FDA should tighten safety regulations, not weaken them. I strongly oppose the requested changes to mifepristone’s REMS and EASU oversight based on two primary concerns: 1. Reliance on Inadequate and Biased Data; 2. Ethical and Societal Consequences of Chemical Abortion. Please see the attached file for more information from the Catholic Medical Association that is in line with my views on the topic. Thank you very much. May God bless you.
