Comment from Pennridge Animal Hospital

Summary: A veterinary hospital representative argues that the proposed action is necessary to allow for the stocking of 0.5mg prazosin tablets. They explain that the current 1mg capsule is impractical for feline patients, who require smaller doses for emergency treatments like urinary obstructions.
Comment in reference to GFI #256 guidance. Compounded options of prazosin for office stock are important for our hospital's standard of care for sick patients. The commercially available option of 1mg capsules is not a realistic treatment option for most of our patients as the majority of them are feline and require half that dose at a time. The tiny tablets 0.5mg that Wedgewood offers is critical for our care of these patients both in hospital and at home with their owner; we can't expect owners (or our staff) to be compliant about sprinkling half of a capsule accurately or appropriately into the pet. It is also ideal for the best patient care to be able to pill the patient while they are in the hospital, as most of them do not want to eat while they are hospitalized due to stress and being a cat, as the majority of the patients requiring this medication are in an emergency situation of having urinary obstructions and need this medication immediately after they are unblocked. Therefore we urge you to reconsider allowing variations of prazosin to be stocked for office use.
