Comment from Pennridge Animal Hospital

Summary: A veterinary hospital representative argues that theophylline should be included in the list of bulk drug substances for compounding office stock. They state that the currently available commercial product is unsuitable for many small patients and that having lower-strength compounded options on hand is critical for providing immediate care.
Comment in reference to GFI #256 guidance. Stocking compounded options for theophylline are very important for our hospital to provide the best and most immediate care for our patients in a time of need when waiting days for a shipment of medication to arrive isn't realistic. The only commercially available product of theophylline on the market isn't an option for the majority of our patients that need treatment, therefore stocking lower strengths such as the tiny tablet options Wedgewood provides us is critical to help us treat patients immediately. Most of our patients that take theophylline are too small to be able to use the 300mg ER FDA approved drug and we need to have other options on hand so we urge you to reconsider this medication for office stock.
