Summary: A veterinary medical facility in California is requesting the inclusion of compounded Doxycycline on the list of bulk drug substances. They argue that current FDA-approved forms are often unsuitable for specific dosages or difficult-to-medicate patients, and compounding allows for safer, more precise treatment.
Compounded Doxycycline. I am writing on behalf of our veterinary medical facility in California. Currently we treat patients of many sizes and the forms of Doxycycline that are FDA approved and available are not always suitable for our patients. If a patient needs a specific mg and there is only a capsule form available then we can not prescribe to that patient. If there is a pill form available, but it is not scored, then the medication is not equally distributed throughout the tablet to ensure that our patient receives the proper mg for treatment. We risk under or overdosing the patient each time. Our practice is located in a community that has a large portion of retired citizens and some of their pets are very difficult to medicate, and trying to give a pill to these patients can turn harmful for some of our clients that are elderly. As a veterinary practice we pay close attention to our patients. Maybe even closer attention than many human doctors do to their patients. One reason is because they can't tell us where it hurts, or what is wrong, so we have to be very observant and present with their care. One way we do that is with special compounded medications.
