Summary: A pharmacy student expresses concern over the safety of compounded medications and advocates for stricter regulations, protocols, and oversight of compounding companies. The commenter specifically warns against the risks of telehealth prescribing, the addition of untested supplements, and the off-label marketing of GLP-1 medications.
Please consider the safety of patients looking for these medications in looking for next steps. If these medications continue to be compounded, at least propose stronger restrictions, protocols, and regulations regarding these companies. Many of these companies attempt to get around the current rules and regulations by offering doses not available through the FDA approved medications or adding additional supplements into the medications, where neither of these forms have been tested on humans OR animals, and chemical reactions are likely to occur and change the effect of the medication when adding supplements. Please also crack down on companies advertising GLP-1s for research only, while they also contain literature explaining how to properly dose these medications in humans, despite knowing they are not intended for human use, therefore encouraging unintended use they themselves caution against (we know their real motives, to make money on those without access to these drugs). May we also continue long term studies of these medications to avoid another Fen-Phen epidemic? Particularly highlighting cases of patients requiring medical intervention when the medication slowed their digestion too much to inner organ damage and death? Telehealth prescribing of these medications is terribly dangerous, as providers cannot accurately assess the effects of these medications on the patients’ bodies, leading to these conditions. Thank you, Food and Drug Administration, for considering our comments and concerns when making these decisions.
