I support the FAA's effort to update regulations that no longer reflect current operational practices. The proposed rule appropriately recognizes that aviation weather observations have been provided under FAA authority for many years and removes outdated references to the National Weather Service. While I support modernization and increased flexibility in weather reporting, I encourage the FAA to establish clear safeguards regarding the approval and use of alternative weather sources, analyzed weather products, and emerging technologies. Weather observations are a critical component of aviation safety. Pilots, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers rely on accurate, timely, and reliable weather information to make operational decisions. As the FAA expands its ability to approve alternative weather sources, I respectfully recommend the following: Establish measurable performance standards for any weather source approved by the Administrator, including accuracy, reliability, availability, latency, and quality assurance requirements. Require ongoing validation and verification of approved alternative weather sources against existing FAA-approved observation methods to ensure continued operational performance and safety. Maintain transparency regarding approved weather sources, including the standards used for approval and any operational limitations associated with those systems. Require that any alternative weather source demonstrate an equivalent or greater level of safety when compared to existing FAA-approved observation methods before being approved for operational use. Consider the operational impact on air traffic personnel and ensure that new weather reporting technologies do not unintentionally increase controller workload or require controllers to compensate for deficiencies in weather reporting systems. Weather information supports flight planning, instrument approaches, departures, air traffic management, and pilot decision-making. Any expansion of approved weather sources should be accompanied by robust safety oversight and clear performance standards to maintain confidence in the National Airspace System. I support the FAA's goal of modernizing weather reporting regulations and improving flexibility. However, that flexibility should be accompanied by transparent approval criteria, continuous validation, and strong safety oversight to ensure that future innovations maintain the high level of reliability required for aviation operations.
