Summary: The commenter opposes the proposed extension of the compliance deadline for PFOA and PFOS Maximum Contaminant Levels. They argue that the chemicals are toxic "forever chemicals" that pose a significant risk to human health and that the benefits of an exemption do not outweigh the costs.
I am OPPOSED to this proposed federal exemption, pursuant to Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) 1416(f) and 1450(a)(1), that will extend the dates of compliance with the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) from April 26, 2029, to April 26, 2031, for those systems that submit a request. These systems do not need such an exemption. The MCLs for PFOA and PFOS are there for good reason! They protect life! They ensure our children are not exposed to toxic and forever chemicals. Let me emphasize that last adjective—FOREVER. Once released into our soil and our water, and after leaching into our crops, these forever chemicals are consumed by our animals and ourselves. While we have yet to study the full effects of these toxins on plant and animal life—including human life, of course—we know they will last for millennia. They will be present in our bodies long after our last breath. Please do not vote for this proposed exemption. The benefits do not outweigh the costs. This is a terrible proposal for America and America's children most of all.
