I am writing to express concern about EPA's proposal to extend compliance deadlines for drinking water systems required to meet federal limits for PFOA and PFOS.
The 2024 drinking water standards represented a long-overdue commitment to protecting communities from PFAS contamination. PFOA and PFOS have been linked to some serious health risks, including cancer, immune system impacts, and developmental harm.
While I recognize that some water systems face challenges in implementing treatment upgrades, communities should not bear the burden of prolonged exposure to toxic chemicals because of delays in compliance.
Every community deserves safe, clean drinking water as quickly as possible. I urge EPA to prioritize investments and accountability measures that help water systems meet PFAS standards without unnecessary delays.
