I am writing as a 10th grade Biotechnology student regarding the proposed
32-million Wolbachia-infected mosquito release in Florida and California. I am concerned about the citizens' well being, and their view on the safety of this project, that is why I propose that instead of forcing a study on the residents, to tell them the benefits and the risks of releasing the mosquitoes, and what effects you believe it will have. Then allow the members who listened and took the time to learn the subject, to vote on the matter and give their opinions. From the Singapore NEJM trial, it showed very promising results, but also, it was in a different environment then where they would be released. Although residents may feel concerned with this, it would be more beneficial for them to have the option, and understand what they are allowing, then forcing them to allow something that may affect the population. It is understandable where it is believed that the environment will adapt, and the people will become used to this change, but, even if that is true, the community still may be upset and concerned about not being allowed to have a voice in their home. So I am asking you, to please educate the community, and allow them to decide if they should allow this in their homes.
