I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed changes to the Environmental Protection Agency rule entitled “Hazardous and Solid Waste Management System: Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals From Electric Utilities; Legacy/CCRMU Amendments” (Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OLEM-2020-0107).
Currently the EPA’s proposed rules regarding coal ash would remove all regulations on dry coal ash dumps, despite the fact that these sites are known to be contaminating groundwater.
Additionally, these rules would allow authorities to set weaker, site-specific standards for toxins like lead, cobalt, lithium and molybdenum in groundwater, permitting contamination above safe levels. We rely upon the EPA to keep us safe, not to help corporate entities profit. It may sound radical in today’s climate, but it really matters that the EPA actually be an agency that protects the environment and rejects this proposal.
