Summary: A commercial laboratory representative argues that wastewater laboratories should have more flexibility to choose and schedule performance testing (PT) studies to support their DMRQA reporting. They suggest this change would align WET laboratory requirements with analytical parameter requirements and help reduce laboratory certification costs.
Commercial laboratories are required to perform performance evaluation studies to maintain certification for various state agencies and/or NELAP. For WET certification, only the DMRQA is available from PT providers. For analytical parameters, laboratories may choose a PT study to be used in support of the DMRQA. WET laboratories should have the same flexibility to perform a PT study that may be used in support of DMRQA reporting. This would give WET laboratories the ability to schedule when a PT study may be performed. Having this ability would aid in reducing laboratory costs to maintain certification.
