Tiny House Alliance USASupportAdvocacy
Summary: Janet Thome, President of Tiny House Alliance USA, argues that tiny houses on wheels are a viable, low-energy housing solution that is currently suppressed by building codes and manufacturers. She advocates for code changes that would allow these homes to be regulated and financed more easily to improve housing affordability and provide alternatives to nursing homes.
Americans want to live in tiny houses on wheels. This is a viable housing type that has been overlooked and suppressed by large manufacturers and the International Code Council. This type of housing is typically 400 square feet or less that could be a single family dwelling, an ADU, a part of a cottage development, or in a tiny house community for mutual support. Tiny houses on wheels require little energy. Imagine an electric bill under fifty dollars a month. Imagine a group of people coming together to share the cost of infrastructure. It is the perfect alternative to assisted living and a way individuals can plan to age in place near loved ones. Medicare could use tiny houses on wheels as an alternative to nursing homes. I just spoke to a woman who pulled her mother out of a nursing home that was costing $7000.00 a month and they did not even bath this woman. That is $84,000 a year. Medicare could purchase tiny houses on wheels and they could be placed in the backyard of a family member or caregiver. Imagine the savings. Tiny Houses on wheels can be used as much needed residual income as a rental, but they are suppressed, just like manufactured homes. This type of housing is blocked from zoning, financing, and a path to be regulated that represents the interest of the homeowner. For ten years, the tiny house industry has spun their wheels with ICC, to add provisions for movable homes through a code change. The code has been turned downed three times in 10 years. That is why I am sharing a link to the article.
