Summary: The commenter, a former Fulbright US. Student Program Grantee, opposes the proposal to rescind the regulations governing International Education and Fulbright-Hayes Programs. They argue that the program provides life-changing opportunities for students and that diminishing its regulatory structure would harm international exchange and the country's ability to foster global collaboration.
Good evening,
I am writing to object to the proposal to rescind the regulations governing federal Title VI International Education and Fulbright-Hayes Programs (34 CFR Parts 655, 656, 657, 658, 660, 661, 662, 663, 664, and 669). I was a Fulbright US. Student Program Grantee to Canada in 2022 who has greatly benefitted from the program and believes that it would be a disaster for it to diminish its current regulatory structure or cease its full operability under new rules. As a student, I loved history and learning. When Fulbright recruiters came to my university, I was encouraged to apply by a beloved professor and mentor. The grant presented me with my first experience studying abroad. I had the opportunity to attend a college in my host country where I worked on research, attended classes, and volunteered in the local community. This experience was life changing and expanded my understanding of others and deepened my commitment to research and inquiry. After graduating, I continue to benefit from my experience in the Fulbright Program academically and professionally. International exchange programs like Fulbright are efficient and well-run programs. They regularly meet and follow a well-worn internal process to field proposals and determine grantees. It would be a grave mistake for the future and well-being of this country to kneecap students' exposure and opportunity to study abroad and engage in international exchange effortsFor 80 years this program and others have strengthened the United States by encouraging its best young people and scholars to collaborate, conduct research, and hone their skills towards improving this country and the wider world. It is because of this that I strongly ask for this proposal to be rescinded and rejected.
Respectfully Submitted,
K.D.
