I am a certified fertility awareness-based method (FABM) instructor with 20 years experience teaching a legacy FABM called the Billings Ovulation Method (BOM). Couples who are taught by certified FABM instructors conceive faster via fertility-focused intercourse. More specifically, 78% of couples using the BOM with a certified instructor will conceive within 6 cycles of correctly timed intercourse. (See references below) A policy that supports increased access to certified FABM instruction will save couples time, money and emotional damage. It can also strengthen the relationship by improving couples communication. For couples who do not conceive within 6 cycles of correctly timed intercourse, the FABM chart becomes a diagnostic tool for chart-literate providers of Restorative Reproductive Medicine (RRM). Cycle chart-timed hormonal evaluation is used to assess ovulatory quality, luteal phase adequacy, progesterone sufficiency, and dynamic hormonal patterns across the cycle rather than relying only on early follicular testing. This provides a more accurate and comprehensive picture of reproductive health than single-point testing. I'm in strong support of a policy that links couples to certified FABM instructors and RRM providers. This model of care empowers couples to know their bodies, ask better questions, and receive more comprehensive care that is tailored to their unique patterns of fertility and infertility. Certified FABM instructors are early detectors of clinically relevant symptoms that can lead to earlier diagnosis of endometriosis, PCOS/PMOS and fibroids - the top 3 female diagnoses affecting fertility. Earlier diagnosis leads to earlier treatment of these oft debilating conditions. The BOM is especially accessible as the only evidence-based FABM that requires no technology, can be used by visually impaired or illiterate women, and is available in multiple languages including Spanish.
