Summary: Celeste Weller, representing the City of Pelican City Council, submitted a resolution opposing proposed changes to the Federal Subsistence Management Program (FSMP). The council argues that the proposed changes could harm Alaska Natives and other subsistence users by causing food insecurity and removing local voices from management.
Dear Ms. Moriarty,
On 2/11/26, the Pelican City Council unanimously passed Resolution 2026-2, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PELICAN, ALASKA REGARDING THE FEDERAL SUBSISTENCE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM REVIEW.
This resolution is in response to the Secretary of Interior and Secretary of Agriculture's review of the Federal subsistence Management Program. Our council feels strongly that proposed changes to the program could potentially be detrimental to Alaska Natives and other subsistence users, causing further food insecurity, and eliminating invaluable local voices from management of the program.
We strongly urge you to consider this Resolution, as well as others like it, including the City of Sitka, petitions from the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council, Sitka Conservation Society, and every Alaska resident that has commented. Please stand up for our Subsistence rights and access.
