I oppose all revisions that would weaken BLM 6320: “BLM Manual 6320, Considering Lands with Wilderness Characteristics in Land Use Planning”. Do not weaken protections for wilderness areas, lands with wilderness characteristics, or recommended, proposed, and/or eligible wilderness areas. When motorized vehicles, roads, or logging are admitted into these areas, their wilderness character is destroyed. Congress can’t fix it in the future. America’s loss is permanent. Studies now show that wilderness areas underground have vast networks of mycorrhizae fungi that help them thrive and cannot be replaced after an area is disturbed. So very many humans think only of their short term pleasures and desires and not the value of preservation even for their lifetimes, let alone for future generations. Roads and motorized vehicles bring more and more people deeper and deeper into wilderness and bring more fires and pollution and garbage and erosion of slopes and sediment and pollution into rivers and streams. Cutting trees just for firewood, let alone logging, cuts back the shade over waters raising their temperatures and harming fish and their spawn and other freshwater invertebrates that need the cool, clean, unsedimented creeks and river areas. The Bureau of Land Management has given no sensible reason for reversing decades of protections. A change on this scale, made without a scientific and sound and needed basis and against the clear weight of public objection, is unjustified. Please, I urge you to preserve existing standards. Please continue protecting our wild lands as they have been protected.
