I strongly oppose any changes to BLM Manual 6320, "Considering Lands with Wilderness Characteristics in Land Use Planning," that would reduce safeguards for wilderness areas, lands with wilderness characteristics, or areas identified as eligible, proposed, or recommended for wilderness designation.
Once roads are built, logging occurs, or motorized vehicles are allowed into these landscapes, the qualities that make them wild are permanently diminished. Those losses cannot simply be reversed by future action from Congress. When wilderness is degraded, it is gone forever.
The Bureau of Land Management has not provided a compelling justification for abandoning long-established conservation policies. Weakening these protections without a clear, evidence-based rationale—and despite substantial public concern—would be a serious mistake.
I respectfully urge you to retain the current protections and continue managing these lands in a way that preserves their wilderness character for future generations.
