Summary: American Prairie opposes the proposed grazing rule, arguing that it would arbitrarily disqualify their bison grazing activities which they claim are compliant with existing BLM guidelines. They assert that their practices support the BLM's "multiple use" mandate by balancing production, conservation, and recreation.
As we celebrate 250 years of America, we should recognize our remarkable heritage, including our native plants and animals which have helped define who we are as a free people. BLM was established in part to take care of some of our public lands that have been mistreated including over-grazing. American Prairie has been one of the entities that has worked very hard to see that BLM lands are restored and productive and protected from abuse. BLM has a responsibility to see that its grazing permits are proper. For years American Prairie has been awarded grazing permits from BLM in accordance with BLM stipulations and has managed according to the BLM requirements. Today a proposed\n arbitrary action by the BLM would disqualify American Prairie from continuing its grazing activities of bison on BLM lands. The apparent action envisioned by BLM is misguided and should be withdrawn. American Prairie's bison activities are fully within the established guidelines and requirements of BLM for productive grazing. Some of the bison are used to provide food for local people and native Americans that have historically lived in Montana and other bison are used to increase the number of bison which is part of sound management. American Prairie in addition to using the land under permit for raising bison for production are also involved in Amerian Prairie's work to restore and properly manage these lands for long-term productivity allowing for mixed uses of economic benefits to the area, recreation, and conservation. The very purpose of BLM as displayed on the agency's home page is for multiple use of its lands. Any review of American Prairie's activities shows very plainly that its multiple use, including grazing animals for production, is fully within and exemplifies the fulfillment of BLM's stated purpose of multiple use. Please rescing the proposed action and allow bison grazing to be an allowed activity as it has been for many years.
